Dental hygienists are dental health care professionals and work
as part of the dental team. While dentists concentrate on treating tooth and
gum conditions, the dental hygienist has a vital role in helping to prevent
problems from arising.
A dental hygienist carries out procedures such as removing
plaque, tartar and deposits from your teeth using hand and rotary instruments.
If necessary the dental hygienist can place fissure sealants on
your teeth. Fissure sealants are clear or sometimes white plastic coatings that
are painted onto the biting surface of the back teeth. Some people have very
deep fissures in their back teeth, which can be difficult to keep clean - by
sealing these fissures with a resin film helps to protect the surface from
decay.
A dental hygienist will demonstrate to you if necessary how to
floss and brush properly and can also advise you on a healthy diet.
For more information please see Periodontal Information Sheet.
This high tech piece of equipment works to gently remove the hardened plaque that has built up on the teeth. It vibrates ultrasonically to remove plaque so gives a tickle sensation, similar to an electric tooth brush. It has many settings and can be adjusted to make sure the patient is completely comfortable. In some cases, for very sensitive teeth we may offer anesthetic to prevent any discomfort.
